Can Washington Make History Against State Champs Spring Mills?

Tonight, all eyes in West Virginia high school basketball will be on Washington High School, as the No. 4 ranked Washington Patriots host the defending state champions and No. 2 ranked Spring Mills Cardinals in one of the most anticipated matchups of the season.

This marks the second meeting between these two programs. Their first matchup on January 6, 2026, was a lopsided affair, with Spring Mills controlling the game from start to finish in a 61–38 victory. Since that loss, Washington has responded in a big way.

The Patriots enter tonight’s contest 5–0 since January 6, carrying an impressive 11–1 overall record. They’ve found their rhythm on both ends of the floor and now have a chance on their home court to become the first West Virginia team to defeat Spring Mills since February 1, 2025.

Spring Mills hasn’t slowed down either. The Cardinals are 6–0 since their last meeting with Washington, pushing their overall record to 12–1. Even more impressive, Spring Mills has not lost to a West Virginia opponent in nearly a full year, a streak that speaks to their dominance across the state.

However, tonight presents a different challenge.

For the first time this season against Washington, Spring Mills will be without their floor general, Xavier Anderson, who was lost for the year due to a season-ending injury. This will be the third game without Anderson, and tonight will reveal just how much his absence impacts the Cardinals in a hostile road environment.

Washington will look to capitalize on that opportunity, while Spring Mills aims to prove their championship depth and culture extend beyond any one player.

Momentum, rankings, streaks, and pride collide tonight at Washington High School.

I’ll be on hand capturing the intensity, energy, and defining moments from this marquee matchup. Be sure to check back for game-day photos and coverage from what promises to be a special night of West Virginia high school basketball.
