Playoff Tension, Toughness, and a Statement Win: Spring Mills Defeats Musselman 31–20

Friday night at Cardinal Stadium felt different the moment both teams stepped onto the field. This was the second meeting between Spring Mills and Musselman this season, but the energy didn’t resemble their first matchup—when Spring Mills rolled to a 20–0 victory. This time, you could feel the temperature rise before the opening whistle.

During warmups, Musselman made it clear they weren’t intimidated by their earlier loss, and Spring Mills took offense to the visitors chirping on their home turf. The back-and-forth energy set the stage for exactly what you hope for in November—good ole playoff football.

Once the game kicked off, Musselman showed a level of grit and toughness that hadn’t been on display in the first matchup. They became the first team to put points on the board against Spring Mills since the 2023–24 season, ending the Cardinals’ long shutout streak in this rivalry. They battled for four full quarters, refusing to back down even as Spring Mills made the big plays that ultimately shaped the outcome.

Spring Mills took control when it mattered most, capitalizing on field position, playmaking, and timely execution on both sides of the ball. Their 31–20 win moved them to the second round of the WVSSAC AAAA playoffs, but it also exposed areas they’ll need to tighten up quickly. Next week, they head north to face the top-ranked Morgantown Mohigans—a program with championship expectations and the firepower to match.

If Spring Mills hopes to go 2–0 in this year’s postseason, they’ll need to clean up the mental mistakes, sharpen their defensive discipline, and match Morgantown’s physicality snap for snap. The talent is there. The opportunity is there. Now it’s about execution.

I captured the full emotion, intensity, and atmosphere of this first-round battle—from the pregame tension to the final whistle.
