Spring Mills Opens Season with 14–0 Win Over Jefferson

Friday night under the lights, the Spring Mills Cardinals kicked off their season with a hard-fought 14–0 victory over Jefferson. The game was a defensive battle from start to finish, but Spring Mills’ explosive running back duo of Blake Sanders and Tavon Jones provided the spark, each breaking off big runs that turned into touchdowns.

While the Cardinals came away with the shutout win, there were still a few missed opportunities on the offensive side. Two slightly overthrown passes could have been scores, and another underthrown ball gave Jefferson’s defense time to close the gap—even though wideout DJ Mayer had a 10-yard cushion on the play. Jefferson also made a key defensive stand late in the game, coming up with an interception in the end zone to prevent another Spring Mills touchdown.

That’s the nature of a season opener—some things click right away, and others need fine-tuning. If Spring Mills wants to make it back to the State Championship game, they’ll need to connect on those big plays and avoid leaving points on the board. The encouraging news is the potential is there, and it’s clear this offense has plenty of firepower waiting to break through.

Defensively, the Cardinals shined all night. They consistently applied pressure, forced turnovers, and came up with huge stops. Senior standout and University of Cincinnati commit Xavier Anderson was a force up front, racking up big sacks and setting the tone for a defense that looks ready to carry this team deep into the season.

This was just Week One, but the energy, talent, and potential of this Spring Mills squad are undeniable. The road back to the championship is long, but Friday’s performance showed they’re ready to take that journey.
